Lesbian Manga and Yuri Manga: Your Guide to Sapphic Manga

If you love lesbian and sapphic books but have never explored manga, you are entering a much bigger world than you might expect.

There are quiet stories about two girls slowly realizing they’re falling in love. There are romances between adult women dealing with careers, marriage and ordinary life. There are princesses, witches, villainesses, supernatural worlds, horror, memoir and deeply complicated relationships that would never fit comfortably under the label “romance.”

And then there’s the terminology: yuri, Girls’ Love, GL, lesbian manga, sapphic manga. They’re often used as if they mean exactly the same thing. They don’t.

What Is Manga?

Manga are Japanese comics. Manga is a format and publishing tradition, not a genre: a manga can be romance, fantasy, horror, comedy, science fiction, mystery, slice of life or almost anything else. Yuri is one of many categories inside that enormous world.

Most manga are serialized chapter by chapter in magazines or online, then collected into volumes. So buying Volume 1 usually doesn’t mean buying a complete story. A series might run three volumes, or eight, or twenty, and it might not be finished yet. That matters when you choose what to read, which is why every series on this page lists its status.

What Is Yuri?

Yuri (literally “lily”) is a Japanese term for works centered on significant emotional, romantic or sexual relationships between female characters. It’s broader than the English publishing category lesbian romance.

A yuri story can have an established couple, or two girls slowly discovering their attraction, or adult women having sex. It can be fantasy, psychological drama or horror. And historically, the category has also included stories built around intense emotional intimacy or romantic subtext.

That last point matters. Seeing yuri on a cover doesn’t automatically tell you, “This is a lesbian romance with two explicitly lesbian protagonists and a guaranteed happy ending.” Sometimes that’s exactly what you get. Sometimes it isn’t.

Yuri, GL, Lesbian Manga and Sapphic Manga: What’s the Difference?

These categories overlap, and there’s no universal rule separating them. This is the practical distinction we use at Lesbian Romance Reads:

Is Yuri Just the Japanese Word for Lesbian?

No, and this is the most important distinction for readers coming from English-language LGBTQ+ fiction. Lesbian is an identity. Yuri is a category of storytelling. They can overlap completely, but they don’t have to.

Some yuri characters clearly understand themselves as lesbian or queer; the heroine of I’m in Love with the Villainess is openly lesbian, and so is Fumi in Sweet Blue Flowers. Others fall in love with a woman without adopting any label. Some stories barely discuss sexuality as identity; others deal directly with coming out, discrimination, family and queer community. So we describe each manga individually rather than forcing them all into one box.

A Short History of Yuri

Relationships between girls didn’t appear in Japanese comics the day publishers created a yuri shelf. The roots go back to Class S (the “S” is for “sister”), a strand of girls’ culture and fiction from the 1910s to the 1930s about intense romantic friendships between schoolgirls. Its most famous writer, Nobuko Yoshiya, serialized her Hana Monogatari (“Flower Tales”) from 1916 to 1924, and Yoshiya herself lived for decades with her female partner.

Those relationships were often framed very differently from modern lesbian identity, frequently as a phase before marriage. Later manga explored female–female attraction more openly and in more varied ways. Revolutionary Girl Utena (1996–98) became a landmark for sapphic readers of manga and anime.

The 2000s turned yuri into a recognizable publishing category. Yuri Shimai, the first dedicated yuri manga magazine, launched in 2003; its successor, Comic Yuri Hime, arrived in 2005 and is still running, home to many of the series on this page, including I Married My Female Friend. Today yuri covers school romance, adult relationships, workplace stories, fantasy, horror, science fiction, marriage, sexuality, queer community and autobiography.

The Best Yuri Manga for Beginners

You don’t need to begin with the oldest or supposedly “most important” manga. Start with something that matches what you already enjoy reading. These are complete (or nearly), well translated and easy to love.

Yuri Manga About Adult Women

If you’re coming from lesbian romance novels, you may notice a lot of school uniforms in yuri. That’s nowhere near the whole genre. Adult yuri gives you careers, marriage, domestic life, sexuality and relationships after adolescence.

One reason this hub is called Lesbian Manga and Yuri Manga rather than “Best Yuri Romance” is that important queer comics exist outside romance.

Where Does Revolutionary Girl Utena Fit?

Utena matters enormously to the history of sapphic manga and anime, but that doesn’t mean it offers the same reading experience as Bloom Into You.

School Yuri vs. Adult Yuri

School yuri tends to deal with first love, identity, friendship turning into attraction, coming of age, jealousy and uncertainty. Good starting points: Bloom Into You, Girl Friends, Kase-san and… (series), Whisper Me a Love Song, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All or The Moon on a Rainy Night.

Adult yuri can be about work, marriage, divorce, sexuality, domestic life, long-term partnership, money, family and past relationships. Good starting points: Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon, Still Sick, Even Though We’re Adults, I Married My Female Friend, After Hours or Run Away With Me, Girl. Neither is better; they’re simply very different reading experiences.

Does Yuri Manga Always Have a Happy Ending?

No. This is the most important warning for readers arriving from genre romance: yuri doesn’t guarantee an HEA. A series can end happily, hopefully, bittersweetly or tragically, or it may still be running, which means nobody knows yet. On LRR we use these labels only when we can verify them:

• HEA: the central couple ends clearly and happily together.
• Together (continues): they’re together at the end, and a sequel continues their story.
• Hopeful: positive overall, but not structured like genre romance.
• Bittersweet: something meaningful is gained, and something significant is lost.
• Ambiguous: the story never clearly defines the relationship.
• Ongoing: the series isn’t finished. We won’t predict the ending.
• Not yet verified by LRR: the series is complete but we haven’t confirmed the ending ourselves yet.

Is Yuri Manga Spicy?

It can be. It can also be extraordinarily innocent. The word yuri isn’t a heat rating: one series might contain little more than feelings and a kiss, another explicit sex, another disturbing sexual behavior that shouldn’t be confused with consensual “spice.”

So check the publisher’s age rating. Kodansha, for example, rates Whisper Me a Love Song and Yuri Is My Job! 13+ and The Moon on a Rainy Night and Run Away With Me, Girl 16+. Where a series contains coercion or other difficult material, our cards say so under content notes.

How to Read Manga

Most official English manga keep the Japanese reading direction. If it feels like someone printed your book backward, you’re doing it right; after a few pages most readers stop noticing.

And remember that manga isn’t prose with pictures attached. The art is part of the writing. Facial expressions, panel size, silence and empty space carry information a novel would need paragraphs for. Don’t rush just because there are fewer words.

Before You Buy Volume 1

• Is the manga complete, and how many volumes are there?
• Is the English edition complete, or still catching up with Japan?
• Is there an omnibus collecting several volumes (usually cheaper)?
• Is this Volume 1 actually the manga, or did you find the light novel or an anthology? Amazon search results don’t always make it obvious.
• If you’ve watched the anime, where does the manga go beyond it?

Official English Editions vs. Fan Translations

Finding an English translation online doesn’t mean an official English edition exists. Manga fandom has a long history of unofficial fan translations (“scanlations”) that sometimes introduce series years before a publisher licenses them. On LRR we distinguish between an official English edition that’s complete, one that’s still being published, one that’s licensed or announced, a digital-only edition, and no confirmed English edition. We never treat a fan translation as evidence that a commercial English edition exists, and every series on this page has an official one.

What does yuri mean in manga?

Yuri is a broad Japanese genre category for works centered on meaningful emotional, romantic or sexual relationships between female characters. It ranges from explicit romance to more ambiguous intimacy, depending on the work.

Are all yuri manga romances?

Are all women in yuri lesbians?

No. Characters may be lesbian, bisexual, queer or unlabeled. We avoid assigning identities that the story or creator doesn’t establish.

Does yuri always have a happy ending?

No. Never assume a yuri label guarantees an HEA. Completed series with happy endings include Bloom Into You, Girl Friends, Sweet Blue Flowers and Kiss and White Lily for My Dearest Girl; The Summer You Were There is bittersweet.

Does yuri mean explicit sexual content?

No. Yuri ranges from very gentle stories to sexually explicit material. Check the publisher’s age rating for each series.

Is yuri manga appropriate for teenagers?

Some is and some isn’t. Check official publisher ratings; Kodansha, for example, rates Whisper Me a Love Song 13+ and The Moon on a Rainy Night 16+.

What’s the difference between yuri manga and yuri anime?

Manga is comics; anime is animation. An anime often adapts only part of a manga, so the manga may continue well beyond where the anime ends.

Where should I buy yuri manga?

Identify the official English publisher and edition first (Seven Seas, Kodansha, Yen Press, VIZ Media, TOKYOPOP or Square Enix Manga & Books), then buy from an authorized bookseller or ebook store, or borrow from your library.

Are manhwa and webtoons manga?

If your mental image of yuri is two nervous schoolgirls under cherry blossoms, you’re not entirely wrong. You’re just seeing one corner of a very large room.

Yuri can be sweet first love. It can be an adult woman working out why conventional dating never made her happy, two women building a home, infidelity and terrible decisions, princesses and magic, horror, grief or memoir. It can be funny, romantic, uncomfortable, sexy, quiet, devastating or wonderfully strange. That’s why we won’t reduce it to another “20 Best” list.
