This is the label to watch. It will save you from waiting several hundred pages for a romance that was never meant to be the story.

What Is Sapphic Fantasy?

Sapphic fantasy is fantasy fiction with meaningful women-loving-women characters, relationships or perspectives. The main characters might be lesbian, bisexual, pansexual or queer. The story might be about a love affair, or about a war, a curse, a heist or a coffee shop, with a sapphic heroine at the center of it. You’ll also see it called WLW fantasy, or queer fantasy with women leading the story.

That’s why we don’t treat these three terms as the same thing:

• Sapphic fantasy: fantasy comes first. The heroine or an important relationship is sapphic, but the plot may revolve around magic, politics, survival or adventure.
• Sapphic romantasy: fantasy and romance carry roughly equal weight. Remove the relationship and you’d have a different book.
• Lesbian fantasy romance: romance is the core promise. The world matters, but the relationship drives the story, and readers can expect a happy ending.

Why a Few Popular Picks Aren’t on This List

Our rule for this page: every book needs a sapphic main character or a central F/F relationship. Books where the sapphic characters are on the sidelines don’t make the cut, however good they are.

• Witch King by Martha Wells often turns up on sapphic lists. Its married sapphic couple, Ziede and Tahren, are important, but the protagonist is Kai, a demon, and the book isn’t sapphic-led.
• The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart has a lovely sapphic couple, Phalue and Ranami, who get their own point of view. The main character, Lin, doesn’t have a sapphic storyline.
• She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan is a book we love, and we reviewed it in full, but Zhu’s gender identity is complicated and calling it simply sapphic would flatten it.

All three are worth reading. We just want you to know what you’re getting.

How to Choose a Sapphic Fantasy Book You’ll Actually Enjoy

The easiest mistake is choosing from the cover, or from the word “sapphic” alone. Ask yourself four things first.

1. How much romance do you need?

If falling in love has to drive the story, look for ❤️ central romance or go to romantasy. If you’re happy for romance to share the stage with a rebellion, 💜 major subplot books are your sweet spot. If you mainly want great queer characters in a great world, the whole shelf is open to you.

2. What kind of world do you want to live in?

Epic for kingdoms, wars and dragons. Cozy for shops, food and found family. Dark for curses, gothic houses and morally questionable behavior. YA for first love and coming of age.

3. How dark can it get?

Fantasy wanders into difficult territory quickly: war, captivity, colonial violence, homophobia, sexual violence, body horror. Content notes aren’t there to tell you what not to read. They’re there so you can choose.

4. Are you ready for a series?

Loving book one and then discovering 1,500 more pages ahead is either wonderful news or a small personal crisis. Every card on this page tells you whether the series is finished, so check before you fall in love.

Sapphic Fantasy vs. Sapphic Romantasy: What’s the Difference?

Sapphic fantasy is fantasy with meaningful sapphic characters, where romance may or may not be the main plot. Sapphic romantasy gives the relationship as much weight as the fantasy story, and usually more heat. In practice it’s a spectrum rather than two boxes:

Books don’t care much about our filing systems, and plenty sit on the borders. The Jasmine Throne is somewhere in the middle. Gideon the Ninth sits right at the fantasy-first end. Aurora’s Angel sits at the romance end. The label is only useful because it tells you what kind of reading experience you’re signing up for.
