Mermaid and siren romances both come from sea mythology, but they are not interchangeable. Mermaid stories often focus on merfolk identity, underwater culture, transformation or life between ocean and land. Siren stories more often foreground voice, song, supernatural allure or dangerous influence, although authors can deliberately rewrite either tradition.

LRR records the exact creature language used by the book or author rather than deciding that every oceanic woman is a mermaid or every dangerous singer is a siren. Pirate, selkie, sea-witch and sea-monster stories keep separate tags. Sea-set romances without a mermaid or siren belong on our pirate guide.

Quick answer

Sapphic mermaid and siren romance is a love story between women in which at least one lead is a mermaid, merfolk, siren or (on a clearly labelled shelf) selkie, confirmed by the book or its publisher, and that sea-being identity shapes the relationship. A woman who loves the sea, a nickname or a mythic backdrop does not qualify.

LabelWhat it means on LRR
MermaidThe book calls a lead a mermaid, mer or merfolk.
SirenThe book calls a lead a siren; song, allure or danger usually matter.
SelkieA seal-skin shapeshifter. Labelled separately.
Pirate crossoverA mermaid or siren story that also sails with pirates.

How We Chose These Books

We started from every LRR review and catalogue entry that mentions mermaids, merfolk, sirens, selkies or sea witches, then searched Amazon for sapphic mermaid, siren and selkie romance and checked each publisher description on 1 October 2026. A book qualifies when a lead is confirmed as a mermaid, mer, siren or selkie and the romance is between women.

We record the creature word the book uses. When a title and a description disagree, the card says so. Heat uses the LRR scale and comes from our reviews; most newer titles are marked “Heat not rated” until we review them. Endings appear only when a source confirms them. Indie titles with fewer than five reader ratings, erotica shorts and anthologies were held.

Checked and Not Included

Checked and not included

  • Sea-set books without a confirmed mermaid or siren lead, such as The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea and A Kiss of the Siren’s Song: on our pirate guide.
  • Selkie pirate books where we could not confirm the selkie as a romantic lead, such as Virelai’s Hoard, and Goddess of the Sea, where sirens are part of the world rather than a lead.
  • New or sparsely rated titles held for more evidence: Of Salt and Air, The Siren and Sea-Witch, Selkie’s Promise, Abyssal Kiss and Call of the Siren.
  • Erotica shorts, anthologies, and books whose description never confirms the creature (for example Siren’s Song by Julie Law and Mermaid in the Four Point Universe).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a siren the same as a mermaid?

No. Both come from sea mythology, but mermaid stories usually centre merfolk identity and life between sea and land, while siren stories centre song, allure and danger. We use the word the book uses.

Are mermaid romances all Little Mermaid retellings?

No. Several are, and the Little Mermaid retelling filter shows them, but others are original fantasies, cozy romances or undersea politics.

Where are the pirate books?

Our pirate guide covers sea-set romance. Books with both a pirate ship and a mermaid or siren lead appear here as crossovers.

Do these books have happy endings?

Endings are shown only when a source confirms them. Several here end on cliffhangers.
