Competition is already intimate.
142 verified sapphic sports romances · 25 soccer · 35 hockey · 24 basketball · 9 tennis · 49 across 30+ other sports
The best sapphic sports romances understand that competition is already intimate. Two women train together, chase the same place on a team, read each other’s bodies in motion, and sometimes discover that the person who pushes them hardest is also the person they cannot stop thinking about.
This guide focuses on sports romance. To compare other relationship dynamics and settings, explore all lesbian romance book guides.
This guide is built for readers who want more than a generic sports label. It now covers 142 verified books across more than 35 sports, and you can browse by exact sport, competition level and relationship dynamic: professional athletes, Olympians, college and high-school players, teammates, rivals, coaches, retired athletes and athlete/non-athlete pairings. If you are chasing the feeling of Heated Rivalry rather than a particular sport, start with our sapphic Heated Rivalry read-alikes, matched by rivalry, secrecy, yearning and heat.
LRR treats the sport as real metadata. A book does not become sports romance because one character once played soccer or owns a hockey jersey. The sport must matter to the character, the plot or the relationship, and the sapphic romance must be the main story.

Start Here: 12 Sapphic Sports Romances
These twelve show the range: team and individual sports, pro and college and YA, rivals and teammates, athlete/athlete and athlete/non-athlete, closed door to explicit. Where an LRR review exists, the ending and heat come from it.
SoccerProHEAL3 · Open door
First row: sport, competition level, ending and heat. Second row: the pairing and the relationship dynamics that a source actually supports. Unknown stays unknown.
L1 no on-page sex · L2 closed door or fade to black · L3 open door · L0 explicit · L5 extra spicy. When trusted sources disagree about how explicit a book is, we show the more conservative level. “Heat not rated” means no source we trust rates it yet; “Heat disputed” means trusted sources disagree about whether sex is on the page.
Every card names its source: an LRR review, the publisher or author, a specialist review, or a structured listing such as I Heart SapphFic.

What Counts as Sapphic Sports Romance?
Three tests. The central romance is between two women (we flag nonbinary leads). The romance is the main plot, not a subplot inside a sports drama. And the sport materially shapes at least one lead, the plot or the relationship: she plays it, coaches it, officiates it, runs the team, or the season drives the story.
Sapphic Soccer Romance (25)
Soccer is the clearest single-sport intent in sapphic sports romance, and it is the biggest shelf on this hub. National-team camps and World Cups create forced proximity; club rivalries create enemies; college and high-school teams create first love and co-captain tension.
It is not yet a separate page. We will give soccer its own guide when enough titles clear our stricter verification (about 18 strongly verified romances with confirmed endings). For now, filter the complete collection by soccer, then by rivals or teammates.

Rivals, Teammates and Competitive Chemistry
Sport and relationship dynamic are separate fields. RIVALS means the two women genuinely compete for the same thing. ENEMIES means a broader antagonism. TEAMMATES is its own intimacy and is not folded into friends to lovers. We apply each only where a blurb, review or listing supports it.
See the full sports rivals-to-lovers guide — 26 books where our reviews confirm the leads compete through the sport itself, with the sport and the rivalry named on every card. The Rivals tag below is broader: it follows blurbs and listings, so some of those rivalries are personal rather than sporting.
Rivals (29): All’s Fair in Love and Field Hockey, Backhanded Compliments, Calling the Shots, Checking for Love, Cleat Cute, Clinching the Play, Court Conquest, Cross-Country Love, Delay of Game, Half-Court Heat, Home Court Advantage, Hoops & Heartstrings, I See Red, Magnetic Rivals, Onside Play, Out of Step, into You, Power Play, Ready to Score, Running Home to You, Score to Love, Set Point, Slammed, Sparks Like Ours, Take Her On, The Clinch, Unadulterated Something, Unexpected Goals, Wake Up, Nat & Darcy and You Don’t Have a Shot
Teammates (25): Between the Lines, Catch and Cradle, Checking for Love, Cleat Cute, Clinching the Play, Dragon Boats & Doctor’s Notes, Finding a Keeper, Full Court Crush, Half-Court Heat, Home Court Advantage, Hoops & Heartstrings, Learning to Fall, Lucky Loser, Making It Count, Out of Step, into You, Playmaker, Puck Desire, Running Home to You, Score to Love, She’s a Keeper, Spiking for Love, Take Her On, Top of Her Game, Tumbling for Love and Unexpected Goals
Coach involved (25): A Shot at Love, Bouncing, Calling the Shots, Catch, Coach Z, Delay of Game, Gold, Hat Trick, How You Get the Girl, Like a Power Play, Loser of the Year, Love Pucked, Make Your Move, Out on the Ice, Play You For It, Power Play, Roller Girl, Something in the Water, Taking a Shot at Love, The Change-Up, The Rookie, Thrust, Underwater Vibes, When Dreams Change and When Sparks Fly. The coaching role and any power imbalance are labeled on each card.

Athlete/Athlete vs Athlete/Non-Athlete
This is one of the most useful distinctions on the page. Some readers want two women who understand the same competitive world; 53 books pair two athletes. Others want the contrast of an athlete with someone outside sport, often a journalist, doctor, broadcaster or writer; 46 books do that. Coach and team-staff pairings are labeled separately.

Browse athlete/non-athlete romances →
Butch, Disabled, Neurodivergent and Nonbinary Leads
These combinations are valuable, and they need independent evidence. Athleticism never proves butch or masc identity. Injury never proves disability. Personality never proves autism or ADHD. Every label below names its source on the card.
Butch/masc, source-tagged (21): A Gold Medal in Love, Between the Lines, Calling the Shots, Down South Bayou, Dragon Boats & Doctor’s Notes, Edge of Glory, Finding a Keeper, Fire & Ice, Game Changers, Heart of the Game, Hyacinths and Hydrangeas, I See Red, Loser of the Year, Out on the Ice, Queerleaders, Rebound Play, Roller Girl, She Drives Me Crazy, Stick Around, Take the Shot and The Game Changer. Most tags come from I Heart SapphFic listings or the blurb; see our Butch Lesbian Romance guide for more.
Disability representation (3): Like a Power Play, A Seasonal Love Affair and Rebound Play.
Neurodivergent leads (5): A Gold Medal in Love, Cleat Cute, The Game Changer, Rebound Play and Smash or Pass.
A nonbinary lead (5): A Good Puck, A Gold Medal in Love, I See Red, Two Can Play That Game and Dragon Boats & Doctor’s Notes.
Secret Relationship Sports Romance
18 sports romances on this page have a real relationship that the couple deliberately hide — from a team rule, a coach, an employer, sponsors, the press or a family. Fake dating, closeted leads and private couples do not count on their own. See the full secret-relationship sports guide for the comparison, start-here picks and filters.
How LRR Verifies Sports Romance
We started from about 170 candidate titles and kept 142. Each book was checked for three things: a central romance between two women, romance as the main plot, and a sport that materially matters. Then the details were verified separately: sport, competition level, pairing, dynamics, heat and ending.
The strongest evidence is an LRR review; then the author or publisher; then specialist reviews such as Lesbrary, Kirkus and Smart Bitches; then structured listings such as I Heart SapphFic, whose heat ratings we map to our scale (“Hot & Steamy” to explicit, “Medium” to moderate, “Sweet” or “Fade to Black” to closed door).
We do not infer an ending from the word “romance.” Only 57 of 142 endings are confirmed by a source so far, and the rest say Ending unverified until we confirm them. That gap is deliberate.

Still Verifying and Not Included
Still verifying (14)
- Bound to Be (Lauren Hart): an injured pro soccer player and an actress, but only a structured listing places soccer in the story so far. We haven’t found an official or specialist source showing how much it shapes the romance.
- Guarding the Athlete (Reba Bale): a bodyguard protecting a pro soccer star. As with Bound to Be, only a structured listing confirms the sport so far.
- Pucked By Surprise (Emily Silver): due October 2026. No description yet confirms the leads or how much hockey is in it.
- Top Cheddar (W.A. Grace): due December 2026. So far only its subtitle, “A Sapphic Hockey Romance,” is available.
- Power Play (K.T. Lane): we haven’t found a description, publication year or review yet.
- Silver Linings (R.B. Webb): we haven’t found an official description that confirms a romance between two women.
- The Set Piece (Catherine Lane): the romance between two women is confirmed, but neither is an athlete; soccer is the backdrop around a male player. We haven’t decided yet whether that counts.
- Foul For Me (Diamond Cotton): the only description we’ve found doesn’t show the sport.
- In Her Court (Tamsen Parker): tennis may only be the camp setting, and sources disagree on its series number and year.
- Winning Her Heart (Emily Hayes): a lesbian romance (Forever #5, 2021), but no source we’ve found confirms tennis or any other sport.
- Out of Left Field: Marlee’s Story (Barbara L. Clanton): first published in 2008, and no source we’ve found confirms a central romance between two women.
- Playing for First (Chris Paynter): a love triangle whose description suggests the non-athlete best friend may be the endgame, so baseball’s role in the romance is unclear.
- Hard to Beat (Lexi Greene): a love triangle, and the description doesn’t confirm the two women end up together. Sources also disagree on the author’s name.
- Racing Hearts (Alex Washoe): the description centers on found family and doesn’t clearly state the central romance.
Checked and not included (17)
- The Senator’s Wife (Jen Lyon): one lead is a pro soccer player, but Lesbrary calls her soccer career “peripheral to the main plot.”
- Pulling the Goalie (Kate Cochrane): not out until January 2027. We’ll check it on release.
- Face Off (Chelsea Curto): a romance between a man and a woman.
- Square to the Puck (J.J. Mulder): a romance between two men.
- From Coast to Coast (J.J. Mulder): a romance between two men.
- Breaking the Ice (K.R. Collins): hockey fiction rather than romance. Jude in the Stars found “no romance, no love interest at all” in book one; we haven’t checked the rest of the series.
- Interference (Zoe Reed): sapphic roller hockey, but published in 2014, before the 2015 start of this guide.
- Girl Crushed (Katie Heaney): soccer is a character trait, not part of the plot or the romance.
- Beautiful Game (Kate Christie): published in 2011, before this guide’s 2015 start, and the love interest plays tennis.
- Some Work, All Play (Ina Channing): erotica about three women rather than a romance between two.
- Romancing the Zone (Kenna White): first published in 2006, before this guide’s 2015 start.
- The Avant-Guards (Carly Usdin): an ensemble team comic. Reviews don’t show the romance as the main story.
- The Derby Dames: a 1930s air-race romance (Gabby Ghoulie). The race is the backdrop for a crime thriller rather than a sports romance.
- Like Other Girls (Britta Lundin): a coming-of-age story about gender and sport. The romance is one thread, not the main plot.
- Changing Gears (L A Wright): a romance between two women, but cycling is only a holiday setting.
- Pyramid Stunt (Alex La Bruyere): a dark why-choose romance with a man and two women, not a romance between two women.
- Pas de Deux (MJ Duncan): a violinist and ballerina romance, not a sports book.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as sapphic sports romance?
A book where the central romance is between two women, romance is the main plot, and a sport meaningfully shapes at least one lead, the plot or the relationship.
Which sport has the most sapphic romances?
On LRR, ice hockey: 35 verified books, followed by soccer (25) and basketball (24). Hockey has its own dedicated guide.
Are rivals and enemies the same?
No. Athletic rivals may respect or like each other while competing; enemies implies a broader antagonism. We tag them separately.
Do both women have to be athletes?
No. 53 books pair two athletes and 46 pair an athlete with someone outside sport, such as a journalist, doctor or broadcaster.
Are coach/player romances listed separately?
Yes. 25 books involve a coach, and the role is labeled on each card because the power dynamic matters.
Does a sports injury make a book disability romance?
No. Disability must be independently supported by the text, author, publisher or a reliable review. A temporary injury does not count on its own.
Are sports romances always spicy?
No. 39 of 142 are rated explicit (L4–L5) and 48 are open door (L3); 21 are closed door (L1–L2), and many are not yet rated. Heat is a separate field. For open-door and explicit romance beyond sports, see spicy WLW romance books by spice level.
Are all athletic heroines butch or masc?
No. LRR never infers identity from sport, appearance or body type. Butch and masc labels appear only where a source applies them.
Does soccer have its own guide?
Yes. Sapphic Soccer Romance Books covers all 25 verified soccer romances. Six of them are Kate Christie’s Girls of Summer series about one couple, so the guide treats them as one series recommendation.
How does LRR handle endings?
HEA and HFN are verified separately and never inferred from the word “romance.” 57 of 142 endings are confirmed so far; the rest are marked unverified.
