Verdict: A 40-year-old crime boss walks through a barista’s open door during a storm and never really leaves. The author’s own warning calls him “a walking red flag” and she is not being coy. Our guide had the heroine filed as a woman in the life; she is a civilian, and we have corrected it.

Best for: Readers who want an obsessive, openly-flagged stalker hero, a thirteen-year age gap and a heroine written soft. Not for readers who need the heroine to have leverage.

Heat level: ★★★★☆ (4/5 — “Explicit open door” on romance.io, from 676 reader ratings)

Rating: ★★★★☆ (3.8/5 — 3.81 on Goodreads across 105,602 ratings, 3.70 on StoryGraph, 4.2 from 45,104 on Amazon)

This is an LRR evidence review. We have not read the book text. Everything below is assembled from Goodreads, StoryGraph, romance.io, the author’s own channels and named book blogs — and where the evidence stops, we say so rather than filling the gap.

NERO opens S.J. Tilly’s Alliance series and sits on our Kindle Unlimited mafia guide. Nero is forty and founded the Alliance, a criminal syndicate fronted by a security company. Payton is twenty-seven, a Minneapolis barista who ran from an abusive stepfather at seventeen and has lived off the grid on low-wage work since. He walks into her flat during a storm while evading police and sits down to watch her film.

A correction to our own listing

We had this book in a section called “she is in the life”. That is wrong. Payton has no mafia connection whatsoever — she is a barista with a difficult past and no organisational power of any kind. romance.io tags her poor heroine 66 times, working-class heroine 66, virgin heroine 81, sweet and gentle heroine 58. There is no heroine-power tag on this book at all, and a blogger describes her as “broken and vulnerable”.

She is the civilian the hero brings inside, which is the most common shape in this whole subgenre. We have moved and relabelled it.

How dark is NERO, actually?

The primary source of darkness is the hero: his violence and his obsessive surveillance. The violence is aimed at rivals and threats rather than at Payton — the publisher copy has him promising to paint the streets red for her, which is the standard formulation for a hero whose brutality is protective in intent. But the stalking is aimed squarely at her, and the author says so herself.

The author’s warning is unusually candid and worth quoting rather than summarising:

“This is an adult dark mafia romance. There is graphic on page violence, death, and kidnapping.”

“instances of dubious consent and extreme stalker tendencies”

a hero who is “basically a walking red flag”

That is a verified complete author warning set on her own site, and it is one of the better ones on this shelf: it names dubious consent, it names the stalking, and it does not pretend the hero is anything other than what he is.

Dubious consent: yes, author-confirmed. A reader summarises him as “a stalker, a murderer, and an extremely obsessive man”, which is roughly the marketing.

The heroine’s past abuse is on the page. Her stepfather is why she has been running since seventeen, and the author flags on-page past emotional trauma and physical abuse.

The age gap is thirteen years — Nero forty, Payton twenty-seven — confirmed independently by two sources, and tagged 68 times on romance.io.

Where readers disagree is on tone rather than content. One calls it a “Dark fluffy romance”, which is a genuinely useful description of a book that is violent around the couple and tender inside it. Another is harsher on the heroine: “She was weak, spineless, and innocent.”

Book synopsis

Payton has spent ten years being no one in particular on purpose. Nero has spent his building something that requires him never to be told no. The intrusion that opens the book is played as charm and is, on inspection, exactly what it looks like. What follows is possession framed as protection, with a real threat outside the door to justify it.

My review

Enormously read and middlingly rated: 105,602 Goodreads ratings at 3.81 and 4,130 StoryGraph reviews at 3.70 with a 2% did-not-finish rate. That combination — huge audience, three-point-eight average — usually means a book that delivers exactly one thing very hard and divides everyone on whether they wanted it.

Blog reception matches. Romance & Reality at 3.5 found the first half slow and the hero “totally unhinged”. Jeeves Reads Romance at four stars for the audio called it “a WHOLE other level of messed up” approvingly. The Romance Mafia was positive and flagged it as a standalone with series potential.

The praise concentrates on the epilogues. The criticism concentrates on Payton having very little to do.

Is NERO on Kindle Unlimited?

Yes, verified on 22 August 2026 by reading the Kindle format swatch on the book’s own Amazon product page. Enrolment changes without notice.

How spicy is NERO?

Band 4 of 5 on romance.io, from 676 ratings — the largest heat base of any book on our mafia guide, so this figure is solid. Virgin heroine is tagged 81 times, insta-love 77 and possessive hero 79.

Ending, cliffhanger and series position

HEA: yes, with epilogues. Cliffhanger: no. Standalone: yes, within a series. The Alliance runs to four books — NERO, KING, DOM, HANS — each following a different member, and reviewers treat each as independently readable. Whether the series crosses over with the author’s other work is UNKNOWN; her own series page does not say.

Audiobook

An audiobook exists, narrated by Jack Calihan and Chloe Ryan for Podium Entertainment, running ten hours thirty-eight minutes. It is listed on Libro.fm, so you can buy it through an independent bookshop. Whether audio is included with Kindle Unlimited is UNKNOWN — no Read and Listen for Free language was reachable.

What readers are actually saying (October 2026)

A hundred thousand ratings, a hero people either love or find indefensible, and a heroine a vocal minority wanted more from. Reddit: UNKNOWN / NOT ACCESSIBLE — blocked from our research environment, nothing substituted.

Frequently asked questions

Is NERO on Kindle Unlimited?

Yes as of 22 August 2026, verified on the book’s own Amazon product page.

Is the heroine a mafia figure?

No. Payton is a barista with no criminal connection. We previously listed her otherwise and have corrected it.

How dark is NERO?

Genuinely dark on the hero’s side: graphic on-page violence, death, kidnapping, extreme stalking and dubious consent, all named by the author herself. The violence is aimed at third parties; the surveillance is aimed at the heroine.

How big is the age gap?

Thirteen years. Nero is 40 and Payton is 27, confirmed by two independent sources.

Does the author publish content warnings?

Yes, and they are among the most candid on this shelf — she describes her own hero as basically a walking red flag and names the dubious consent and stalking outright.

Does NERO have a happily ever after or a cliffhanger?

HEA with epilogues that readers single out, and no cliffhanger. It reads standalone within a four-book series.

If you loved NERO, read these next

For obsession written at the same intensity but aimed inward, The Darkest Temptation. For the hardest end of this shelf, Den of Vipers. For a hero with the same possessiveness and a much shorter book, Painted Scars.

The bottom line

The most-read book on our mafia guide and one of the most honestly labelled. The author tells you her hero is a red flag; a hundred thousand readers took her at her word and split down the middle. Just do not come for a heroine with power — that was our error, and it is fixed.
