Verdict: The most divisive book on our spicy Kindle Unlimited list, and its ratings say so. A Midas retelling from the point of view of the woman he gilded — band 3 for heat, and book one does not resolve.

Best for: Readers who want a dark, ornate fairy-tale premise and are willing to commit to a multi-book arc rather than a standalone.

Heat level: ★★★☆☆ (3/5 — romance.io’s “Open door” band)

Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.2/5 — 3.62 on Goodreads across 420,658 ratings — the lowest average of any book on our spicy list, with 11% at one or two stars)

Tropes: Fantasy, fae, royalty, captivity, possessive hero, enemies to lovers, love triangle, slow burn, dark premise.

Kindle Unlimited: Verified in KU on 21 August 2026, checked on the Amazon product page.

Gild by Raven Kennedy book cover

Auren is King Midas’s favourite, kept in a gilded cage and gold from head to foot. The premise is a Midas retelling told from her side, and it is a genuinely striking idea.

The reception is the weakest on our page. Goodreads gives it 3.62 across 420,658 ratings — the lowest average on our spicy list — with 3.53 on romance.io, also the lowest. Eleven percent gave one or two stars and 32% gave three. That distribution says divisive rather than bad, but it also says: know what you are getting.

What Is Gild About?

The Plated Prisoner runs multiple books and this is the first. romance.io bands it 3 of 5, “Open door,” two rungs below the top of our page, and tags it slow burn.

It is also the darkest premise in our band 3 section by a distance, and romance.io’s listing carries content warnings to match — abuse, rape, graphic violence and human trafficking. We are reproducing that listing rather than assessing the book ourselves, and it should be treated as a reason to check further rather than as a complete account.

What Makes This Fairy-Tale Retelling Work

The premise, which is the strongest single idea on our spicy list. Retelling Midas from the perspective of the woman he turned to gold reframes a myth about greed as a story about ownership, and the imagery does real work.

The other thing is commitment. Raven Kennedy does not soften the captivity or pretend the gilding is glamorous, and readers who love this series love it for that refusal.

Book Synopsis

Auren is King Midas’s prized possession, living in a golden cage in a kingdom that is not hers. 402 pages, single point of view, first person. Book one of The Plated Prisoner. It does not resolve — the arc completes across the series.

My Review

Two things about this book are true at once and both matter.

First, the ratings are the weakest on our page and the shape is unusual. Only 20% of 420,658 Goodreads raters gave five stars — the lowest five-star share on our entire spicy list — while 32% gave three and 11% gave one or two. That is not a book people hate. It is a book that leaves a very large number of readers unmoved, and a smaller group actively unhappy. romance.io’s genre-native crowd rates it 3.53, also the lowest figure on the page.

Second, the reason is structural and it is not a mystery. Book one is largely setup. Auren spends the book in a cage, the world is being built rather than moved through, and the arc that readers eventually love takes several volumes to arrive. A reader who picks this up expecting a self-contained romance gets neither the romance nor the containment.

Set against that: the premise is the best idea on this page, and the series has a devoted readership who will tell you the later books repay the first. We cannot verify that from ratings we could reach, so we are reporting it as their claim rather than as our finding.

We land at 3.2 — the lowest score we have given on this list, and specifically a score for book one.

How Spicy Is Gild?

Band 3 of 5 on romance.io — “Open door.” Two rungs below the top of our page, with slow burn tagged on top of that. This is the least explicit book on our spicy list.

The content warnings are a different matter entirely from the heat. romance.io’s listing flags abuse, rape, graphic violence and human trafficking. Low heat does not mean gentle.

Who Should Read This Book?

Read it if you want a genuinely striking dark fairy-tale premise, you are happy to read a series rather than a book, and you want the imagery more than the heat.

Skip it if you want a resolution, or you want spice. This is the least explicit book on our page and it does not end.

What Readers Are Actually Saying (August 2026)

The distribution is the honest summary: 20% five-star, 35% four-star, 32% three-star. That enormous middle band is readers who finished and shrugged, which is a different failure mode from the one-star pile-ons elsewhere on this page.

Both crowds agree. Goodreads 3.62, romance.io 3.53 — the lowest figures on our spicy list from both the general and the genre-native audience.

Two gaps stated plainly: Reddit was unreachable from our research environment, and we have no TikTok metrics because the platform blocks automated access. No trade review of this title was located.

Research note: our environment could not reach Reddit or read TikTok metrics on the day we compiled this, and romance.io now blocks automated access, so the heat band and trope counts here come from data we captured on 21 August 2026 rather than a fresh read. Where a field is not evidenced we say so rather than filling it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gild have a happy ending?

No. Book one does not resolve — the arc completes across the series. If you want a self-contained romance, this is not it.

How spicy is Gild?

romance.io bands it 3 of 5, “Open door” — the least explicit book on our spicy Kindle Unlimited list, with slow burn tagged on top of that.

What are the content warnings for Gild?

romance.io’s listing flags abuse, rape, graphic violence and human trafficking. We are reproducing that listing rather than assessing the book ourselves — treat it as a reason to check further, not as a complete account. Low heat does not mean gentle here.

Why is Gild rated lower than everything else?

Book one is largely setup. Only 20% of Goodreads raters gave five stars — the lowest share on our list — while 32% gave three. That middle mass is readers who finished and were unmoved, rather than readers who were angry. Both Goodreads and romance.io put it lowest on our page.

Do the later books get better?

That is what the series’ devoted readership says, and we are reporting it as their claim rather than as our finding — we could not verify it from ratings we could reach.

What point of view is Gild written in?

Single, first person, from Auren.

If You Loved Gild, Read These Next

All verified in Kindle Unlimited on 21 August 2026.

  • The Serpent and the Wings of Night — Carissa Broadbent. Band 3 romantasy with a real plot engine and, crucially, a resolved ending.
  • A Touch of Darkness — Scarlett St. Clair. Band 4 mythology with immortal gods and a serial structure, if the multi-book commitment is the appeal.
  • Haunting Adeline — H.D. Carlton. If the darkness rather than the fairy tale is what drew you — top heat band, and also unresolved.

The Bottom Line

Gild has the best premise on our spicy Kindle Unlimited list and the weakest reception. Retelling Midas from the perspective of the woman he gilded is a genuinely good idea, and book one spends most of its length building the cage rather than escaping it. Two things to settle before you start: the heat band is 3, not 5, and the book does not end.

The Eikna Overall Ranking

On the Eikna scale, Gild ranks as the strongest premise and the weakest volume on our spicy list — striking imagery, heavy content at low heat, and a first book that is setup rather than story.
